As of 2021, the average age of the nuclear power plants in the world is 39 years old.

Considering that during their lifespan, nuclear sites have seen many modifications for maintenance and have had a wide number of rooms hard to access due to radiation or spatial constraints, a clear layout of an old site is difficult.

This is a clear challenge when it comes to decommissioning as the engineers need the most up-to-date information to define the decommissioning scenarios.

To overachieve that, points clouds of rooms and cells are starting to be collected. However, it is time consuming and not following the ALARA/ALARP principal in some situations.
