When it comes to nuclear facilities, data collection is essential. No matter if the plant is operating or under decommissioning, knowing the state of the plant helps workers to make informed decision.

In some occasions, collecting those data can be tedious or close to impossible: congested area, highly radioactive environment, extreme temperature, etc. This can be extremely problematic and when characterisation is compulsory in those hard-to-reach, hazardous environment, specific systems must be developed and deployed to be able to collect those data.

Developing a specific solution for a challenge is not ideal as it is costly, time-consuming, and not replicable. When in a facility there are multiples areas where data must be collected, the cost of deployment for the whole facility becomes a key and limiting factor.

Having a modular, reusable solution, operating in a harsh environment, and able to carry characterisation tools but also retrieve samples would bring a lot of value.
